I have been an active fine arts photographer for nearly 20 years. As a young man in high school I began using photography as tool for personal expression. When I went off to college I became further inspired with the help of excellent professors who nourished my growing artistic vision. I received a B.F.A. from the University of Dayton and an M.F.A. from Indiana University. I grew up in the Midwest among the cornfields and the factories. My photography has often explored the line between beauty and the banal. Much of my art examines our use of the land and the inevitable tension between the man-made world and nature. Currently, I am working on a series of pinhole images. Pinhole cameras are the most basic of all cameras. They can be made from a variety material including coffee cans, oatmeal boxes and in my case pieces of plastic matt board glued together. They are essentially a light tight box with a small hole letting the light in to strike the film. There is no shutter beyond a small piece of tape that is removed to begin the exposure and placed back to end the exposure. Exposure times vary but are generally recorded in seconds or minutes rather than fractions of a second with traditional lens cameras. The camera has no viewfinder, producing a soft focus image and has a great deal of distortion.

The inherent quality of pinhole photography creates dreamlike images. These photographs explore the mysterious spaces found in the landscape. These qualities push my vision and help me to rely more heavily upon my intuition. The discarded objects both big and small within the environment have a certain sadness and beauty. I search out these places, hoping to find significance among the everyday objects in the landscape. Transforming the commonplace into the mysterious and spiritual is one of my artistic aspirations. Art provides one of the few opportunities for quiet contemplation. My photographs provide a keyhole one can escape into, if only for a moment.
